Georgia State Patrol Senior Trooper David Fryar said the Honda driven by the female victim was northbound on Highway 101 in Villa Rica at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when it apparently hit the back of a Ford F-150.
“The F-150 continued and the Honda somehow drifted into the southbound lane and hit the van,” Fryar said.
Rescue crews were called to the scene to help the victims, some who were trapped in the wreckage of their vehicles. Emergency medical technicians found the victim unresponsive and began CPR on the scene.
Fryar did not release the woman’s name because they had not yet notified the next of kin.
The driver and two passengers in the van were taken to Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica. Their conditions were unknown Tuesday evening.
While the fatal crash remains under investigation, Fryar said that speed was a factor in the crash and that the wet weather could have also played a role.
An estimated 1.24 inches of rain were reported in Carroll County as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Weather Channel, and those rain-soaked roads had the Villa Rica post of the Georgia State Patrol responding to 16 accidents in Carroll County alone many involving hydroplaning cars spinning into others or into the median.
The fatal crash was the only one in the area in which serious injuries were reported.
