Bloomfield Hills car accident lawyer Thomas L. Stroble said today that a number of highly intoxicated drivers arrested over the July Fourth holiday in Michigan points to a great risk on the state’s roads.

“It’s undeniable, given the results of the statewide holiday drunk driving crackdown, that driving while intoxicated remains a serious threat on Michigan roads,” Stroble said.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning recently announced that police in 26 counties arrested 126 drunk drivers during a statewide crackdown over the July 4 holiday period. Twenty-three drivers, or 18.25 percent, had blood-alcohol content (BAC) measuring 0.17 percent or higher, the Detroit News said.
Drivers with 0.17 percent or higher BAC in Michigan are subject to what’s commonly referred to as a “High BAC” charge, or “Super Drunk Driving.” This portion of the OWI Law, adopted in 2010, includes stronger penalties upon conviction than a guilty verdict in an OWI case with lower BAC.
Michigan drivers can also be charged with OWI if alcohol or drugs in their body substantially affects their ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
The legal limit for driving after drinking in Michigan and all U.S. states is 0.08 BAC.
“A driver’s impairment increases exponentially as their BAC rises beyond 0.10 and toward 0.17,” Stroble said. “To describe driving with a 0.17 BAC as ‘reckless’ is an understatement.”
