TUSKEGEE, Ala. — An accident involving as many as six vehicles closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 between Montgomery and Atlanta for almost 10 hours and claimed the life of a 52-year-old Valley woman.

State troopers said Alice Marie, a rear passenger in one of the vehicles, was killed in the accident at about 5:40 a.m. Sunday. Troopers say the incident involved a series of accidents that started with a single vehicle crash.

The most serious of the accidents occurred within an 18-wheeler crashed into the rear of a Kia Sorento, killing Marie and seriously injuring the driver of the Kia, 65-year-old Henry Lee Davis of Valley. The front passenger in the Kia, 54-year-old Barbara Summers of Valley was also injured.

Davis and Summers were taken to a Montgomery area hospital. Other injuries in the accident were minor, troopers said. The southbound side of the highway was closed briefly, but the northbound lanes were shutdown until about 3:30 p.m. Sunday Traffic was rerouted onto U.S. 80.
