Two children traveling with an Irving woman have been killed in an automobile accident in Colorado.

It happened on Highway 50, 12 miles east of Gunnison, at 8 o’clock Saturday morning. State troopers said the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt lost control on a snowpacked highway and was hit by another vehicle.

The driver — 22-year-old Jamie Dowling of Irving — suffered serious injuries. Investigators said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

A five-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl who were passengers in Dowling’s car were killed, although they were properly restrained. Their names were not released.

Everado Ento-Salida of Gunniston, who was driving the car that hit Dowling’s on the two-lane rural highway, suffered minor injuries.

Troopers said the road, about 130 miles southwest of Denver, had been plowed before the crash, but snow was reportedly falling at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed pending results of an investigation. According to a preliminary report, speeding and intoxication were not believed to be factors in the crash.

That storm system has dumped a foot of snow on parts of Colorado, shutting down highways and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
