LEE COUNTY: A fugitive wanted for vehicular homicide in 1993 was located in Georgia and taken into custody, according to Lee County deputies.
On April 9, 1993, Donnie Lee Adkins was driving under the influence when his passenger, Frederick Shields, climbed out of the car and onto the roof. Adkins swerved and Shields fell off the roof, reports said.
Shields died at the scene from his injuries.
At the time of the incident, the Fort Myers Police investigated the accident. Police learned Adkins told the other passengers to tell police Shields fell out of the car while sleeping, reports said.
During the investigation, prior to being interviewed, Adkins left Florida. An arrest warrant was issued for Adkins in February 1994 for vehicular homicide.
In September 2010, local authorities received information that Adkins was living in Georgia. Adkins was located and arrested on September 24.
Adkins will be extradited to Lee County face the charges.
