Police probe death of Amtrak rider

Posted by:

Georgia authorities are investigating whether foul play was involved in the death of a 63-year-old Florida woman who was traveling on an Amtrak train.

Barbara Arteta was traveling with her husband from Virginia to Sanford, Fla., aboard Amtrak’s auto train when she disappeared. Her body was found Thursday near railroad tracks in rural Jesup, Ga. Riders board the auto train in Lorton, which allows them to transport their vehicles while riding the 880 miles between the two cities.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Monday that an autopsy concluded Arteta died from multiple injuries, including a broken neck. He said authorities have yet to determine whether her death was an accident or whether foul play was involved.
