A 54-year-old Bloomington man who was struck by a deputy’s car while crossing a street in that community has been identified, according to California Highway Patrol officers and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.

Alfredo Berumen died at the scene of the 9:14 p.m. accident along Cedar Avenue just south of Santa Ana Avenue and outside of a crosswalk. The deputy, who was heading to a call, suffered a broken arm, sheriff’s officials say.

The deputy was headed south at an unknown speed when the pedestrian began crossing the street from west to east and stepped into the path of the patrol car, CHP officers said in a written statement. The statement doesn’t mention whether the deputy had activated the patrol car’s lights and siren.

The investigation is continuing.
