One man died Thursday morning after the car he was driving on Interstate 95 in Arbutus became airborne and went over a highway overpass, landing on I-195 below and hitting another car, whose driver was also injured.

According to the Maryland State Police, Kenneth L. Kirst III, 20, of the 200 block of Spry Island Road in Joppa, was pronounced dead at the scene by Baltimore County emergency medical crew members. Tristan J. Klein, 37, of the 1200 block of Francis Avenue in Arbutus, who was traveling east on I-195, was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Klein had been discharged from the hospital as of 4 p.m. Thursday, according to a Shock Trauma spokeswoman.

According to State Police Sgt. Mark Black Sr., a preliminary investigation by state troopers and Maryland’s CRASH team indicated that Kirst was traveling north on I-95 about 7 a.m., when he lost control of his 2006 Ford Focus for an “unknown reason” and hit the guardrail on the left side of the road.

After hitting the guardrail, according to state police, the Ford became airborne and landed on the eastbound portion of I-195, where it struck a 2002 Chevy Suburban.

According to Black, there were no passengers in either vehicle. Investigators said Kirst was not wearing a seat belt. There had been no determination of vehicle speeds as of 3 p.m.

I-195 eastbound near I-95 was closed after the accident for about three hours.

Police officers say the cause of the crash is unknown and an investigation continues. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack at 410-780-2700.
