A 75-year-old Bloomfield Hills man died and three people were injured Monday in a traffic crash in Pontiac, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Authorities said a Ford Ranger heading north on Opdyke struck a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt heading south, just after 12:30 p.m. The driver of the Cobalt, Sam Founteas, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report from the sheriff’s office. His passenger, a 66-year-old from Bloomfield Hills, was injured and hospitalized at McLaren-Oakland Hospital, authorities said.

Witnesses said the Ranger, driven by a 51-year-old West Bloomfield resident, had changed lanes to go through an intersection and lost control before striking the Cobalt head-on, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Cobalt was pushed into a 2002 Cadillac Seville that was headed south. The driver of the Seville, a 21-year-old Casco resident, was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the Ranger was also hospitalized and in stable condition, authorities said.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating. Authorities believe alcohol played a role in the crash, according to sheriff’s officials.

All of the people involved were wearing seatbelts.
