A man was killed when his vehicle was struck by a semi on Monday morning. The victim was identified as 61 year old Willie Emory Smart of 107 Wilson Creek, Attapulgus Georgia.
Monday afternoon, Patrick Carter at Plantation Propane told us he looked up just before it happened, along with shots of the crashed jeep picked up by Rathels.
Public Safety Officers and EMS arrived to the crash on Spring Creek Road at Butler Ferry Road at about 10:30 am. Public Safety extricated the victim from his 1994 Jeep.
Willie Smart pulled out from Butler Ferry Road turning left onto Spring Creek and directly into the path of the oncoming semi. The jeep appeared to be struck at an angle on the front left corner with tremendous force. The Floyd Brothers semi was driven by 32 year old Ashby Floyd.
The jeep was flung ahead of the semi and ended up on the far side of the roadway. The semi then clipped an oncoming pickup driven by 62 year old Johnny Potivent. The pickup was spun around and ended up at on the grass at the southeast corner of Butler Ferry. The semi continued on into the grass area next to Spring Creek. There were no other injuries reported.
