DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A driver smashed into two cars and two homes in a DeKalb County neighborhood on Wednesday morning, police said.
Residents on Walnut Creek Drive in Lithonia told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh the woman claimed she lost control of her vehicle around 5:30 a.m.
Authorities said the driver struck a home, knocking open a refrigerator. Resident Cassandra Goodman said she thought her refrigerator had exploded until she smelled smoke and motor oil.
“The lady was walking out and saying, ‘I’m sorry. I lost control.’ And I’m like, ‘how?’” Goodman told Kavanaugh.
The driver also crashed into a second home, causing a large amount of damage to a wall and window as well as furniture inside, authorities said. Resident Tomieka Mims said she was at home with her 10-year-old daughter when the car plowed through the house.
“It was an accident. It wasn’t anybody trying to come in on us and burglarize us. That’s when I calmed down,” Mims said. “Then the reality sets in. There’s a car in the house.”
The driver also hit two cars parked in the street, sideswiping one of the cars and heavily damaging the rear of the second, police said.
A DeKalb police spokesman told Kavanaugh police had ruled out alcohol. Investigators planned to run tests on the car, a 1995 Honda Accord wagon.
The driver told Kavanaugh she had minor injuries.
