CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A driver who lost control of a vehicle and crashed into an embankment may face charges, said a representative for the Georgia State Patrol.
The call came in at 12:44 a.m. Sunday, the GSP.Investigators said four people, all Reinhard College students, were traveling in the 2007 GMC Sierra when the driver lost control. The accident happened on Waleska Road near Reinhardt College Parkway in Cherokee County.
All four individuals were taken to an area hospital, where one person later died. The victim was identified as Steve Excell, 20, of Gwinnett County.
Students said Excell played basketball and ran cross country at Reinhardt College.Students told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas the area where the crash happened is well known to students.”
Roller coaster road. People try to drive fast and get airborne,” said Chance Childers. “It’s pretty much like a rollercoaster. You can’t see in front of you if you are going up the hill. If you are going fast you will definitely catch air,” said student Andy Pringle.
Charges against the driver are pending.
