Three adults, including a pregnant woman, are in critical condition after an accident Thursday night, a spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Around 7:30 p.m., responders arrived near 39th and Northern avenues to find a small minivan turned on its side and a red midsize car that had crashed into the wall of a residential backyard, said fire Capt. Jorge Enrique. Two children, ages 2 and 7, were involved in the crash and sustained minor injuries, he said.

Two adults, a man and a woman both in their mid-20s, and the two children were in the minivan and one man was inside the other vehicle, Enrique said. The woman was reportedly nine months pregnant, he said.

A nearby neighbor saw the accident and was able to pull the children out of the car, Enrique said. After the children were pulled out of the car, fire officials were able to extricate the couple, Enrique said.

“We had to perform an extensive extrication on the minivan,” Enrique said. “We had to tear the roof off the car before we could pull the adults out.”

Police suspect the driver of the red car had collided with a bus earlier and was attempting to flee to scene when it collided with the minivan.

The couple in the minivan and the man in the midsize car were transported to hospitals in critical condition, Enrique said. The children were also taken to a hospital, he said.
