ALBANY, GA — An Albany State University student has been killed in a two-car collision in Newton County.
20-year-old Kayla Quinnisha Ward, a junior forensic science major from Covington, Georgia, was killed Sunday, September 26, on Georgia Highway 20 near the Buckingham exit.
“It was raining at the time and Ward apparently lost control of the car, Ward died at the scene of blunt force injuries suffered in the wreck,” said Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis.
State Patrol officers say Ward was southbound in a Honda Accord and attempted to pass another vehicle when the crash occurred. The Accord struck a northbound Chrysler Pacifica driven by 50-year-old Covington resident David Wells.
Wells and his wife, 47-year-old Fannie Wells, were taken to Walton Regional Hospital and then transferred to Atlanta Medical Center. Their injuries are not life threatening.
A candlelight vigil in memory of Ward will be held at ASU at a later date.
