EAST BRUNSWICK — A three-car accident on the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike left one man hospitalized this afternoon and slowed traffic in the Middlesex County area, police said.

A motorcycle and two passenger vehicles collided around 4:30 p.m. near Exit 9 outside East Brunswick, according to the N.J. State Police. The driver of the motorcycle was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but police did immediately know the extent of his injuries.

There were no other reported injuries, authorities said, and the entire highway had to be closed briefly when a medevac helicopter landed to transport the driver of the motorcycle.

It was not immediately clear what led to the accident. Police said the left lane on the Turnpike’s southbound side remained closed as of 5:30 p.m. so authorities could investigate the wreck.
