The Denver-bound lanes of U.S. 36 have been re-opened as the Colorado State Patrol is wrapping up its initial investigation into a three-car accident that left one person dead this morning and shut down parts of U.S. 36 for hours.

At around 8 a.m., a Jeep hit the back of a Subaru station wagon while both were headed east on U.S. 36 in the right lane, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid.

The Jeep lost control and began to flip, ejecting the male driver, who was declared dead on the scene.

The Subaru slammed into the median and was then hit by a second Jeep. The drivers of the Subaru and the second Jeep — both males — were uninjured. There were no passengers in any of the three cars.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased driver once next of kin have been notified.

The accident initially shut down all lanes of U.S. 36.

The Boulder-bound lanes of U.S. 36 were re-opened at around 9 a.m., but the eastbound lanes remain closed between Table Mesa Drive and the Davidson Mesa until nearly 1 p.m..
